...mportant to remember that turbulence is rarely dangerous. It may also help if you understand a bit more about it. Turbulence is caused by three types of weather conditions, the first being strong winds during take-off or landing. Pilots are trained to deal with these conditions. If winds are too strong then they will hold off until conditions improve.
Clean air turbulence, otherwise known as air pockets, is encountered around jet streams or near mountain ranges. They are caused when two bodies of air moving at different speeds meet. Unfortunately they are impossible detect with radar or the naked eye.
Storm clouds also cause turbulence. The center of storm clouds can produce strong up and downdraughts. While these are not dangerous, pilots will try to avoid these to ease discomfort for passengers.more
