Premiership Betting Review - 13 February 2006

Middlesbrough made a mockery of their 7/1 odds by crushing Chelsea 3-0 at the Riverside Stadium. Boro, with just one win in their last 11 Premiership matches, took the lead through Fabio Rochemback, while further strikes from Stuart Downing and Yakubu sealed a memorable victory. Chelsea, with just one win in their last five league matches, will have busted a few coupons at 2/5.

Manchester United cut Chelseas lead at the top to 12 points with a convincing 3-1 win at Portsmouth. A Ruud van Nistelrooy goal and two from Ronaldo meant 8/15 United were cruising by half-time.

Livepool at Evens kept up the pressure with a victory at Wigan. Defender Sami Hyypia was the unlikely match winner after 30 minutes.

Arsenal and Bolton met for the second time in a fortnight and the match ended in a bad tempered draw. Kevin Nolan gave Bolton a shock lead after 12 minutes and the Trotters almost held out for an 11/2 win until Gilberto levelled the match in injury time.

Evertons moved up to tenth with a 1-0 victory over Blackburn. Goalkeeper Iain Turner was sent off after nine minutes and was replaced by another debutante in 19-year-old John Ruddy. However, the 10-men of Everton took the lead through James Beattie after 33 minutes and held on to win at 5/4.

Newcastle made it two wins out of two for caretaker manager Glenn Roeder with a 2-1 victory at Aston Villa. Shola Ameobi gave the Magpies the lead after two minutes but in-form Luke Moore levelled for Villa with his fifth goal in three matches. Charles NZogbia netted for the second successive week to seal a 14/5 win.

A last gasp goal from Daryl Murphy salvaged a point for rock-bottom Sunderland. Tottenham Hotspur, 7/10 favourites on the day, took the lead on 38 minutes through Robbie Keane and were cruising to victory until two minutes remaining.

Manchester City edged Charlton 3-2 thanks to a stunning 35 yard effort from Joey Barton. City, 9/10 favourites, took a first half lead through Richard Dunne but Darren Bent levelled. Substitute George Samaras made an instant impact and Barton blasted home on 62.

The biggest win of the weekend came at Craven Cottage where Fulham crushed relegation threatened West Brom 6-1. Two goals each from Heidur Helguson and Collins John, Tomasz Radzinski and an own goal from Curtis Davies sealed a fine win at 5/6.

Advertising: Friend, not Foe!

They say advertising is excessive: it interrupts TV series, preceding movie shows and dominating music award ceremonies. Some even lament that advertising not only occupies the media, but is also present everywhere else; the latest music editor softwares could be seen at bus shelters, and online VoIP products pictured in public telephone booths. It is irrelevant and disruptive.

If you agree with my last sentence above, continue reading. You might decide to change your mind.

First of all, I dont think advertisers occupy the media. As a matter of fact, it is the media that courts companies, maybe except for over-popular shows. TV stations need funds to run your favorite programs, and radio broadcasts have to pay for the Music on Demand. It boils down to us consumers: we demand, and the media provides, at a price of course.

Ah, you might now argue that it is the advertisers who flock to the media and pay for available ad space. True! But how many time slots are so coveted over? Shows like the Super Bowl Football are rare. Other less endowed channels, in fact, have some hard time securing long-term ad contracts to be financially sufficient. It is thus fair to conclude that advertisers and the media, and us, are in a multilateral relationship.

Besides its commercial relevance, there is more to this misunderstood industry that we often miss out on, like how advertisements might effect cultural understanding, especially in this globalizing world of business. HSBC features newspaper ads of cultural differences across countries. FedEx has their TV ads filmed in Japan, showing the way Japanese people live and work. And I actually learned from a MasterCard ad that in India, people release white doves for luck. Interesting, isnt it?

In addition, informative ads feed useful information to our preoccupied minds. Public service messages could be conveyed effectively through ad-works on air. And people get to know the latest products available on market during review hours. I mean, it would be a pity if we work so hard to produce all these commodities just to, in the end, know nothing of them. And because we work so hard, we could hardly afford to find out about whats going on ourselves. Informative ads keep our society functioning as it is meant to.

But most of all, advertisers are creative (e-mails are not advertisements; they are spam). The appealing advertisements that crack you up or hook your eyes for the hundredth time take much more than the 30 seconds of airtime. Creativity, and the resulted attention, increases sales, and the advertising environment is so competitive nowadays it truly stimulates the human edge of creativity and nurtures it to flourish. Advertising signifies the human drive to succeed.

To me, what makes modern advertising desirable, besides bridging cultural gap, informing the populace or generating new ideas, is that it empowers every individual possible. It no longer takes an established firm to put up an ad. Any one anywhere can promote their ideas, products and even themselves through the thriving medium of the internet. 15-year-olds can now economically design and effect ads to promote their companies (yes, dont look down on these young entrepreneurs). Any one could adopt different voices using voice changer softwares, and edit audio as well as video ads with the many music editor softwares and video editor softwares available. Because advertising could so omnipotently enable far-reaching creativity of expressions, it is relevant to our human society that values progressing thoughts and selective reception of ideas.

The staunchest critics of advertising might ask, what would be the future of advertising, now when people are able to get rid of the commercials. MythTV offers a plug-in that automatically filters out commercials during recording, whereas video editor softwares allow you to freely cut out unwanted ads from pre-recorded clips. Yes, people are actually paying to be free of advertisements.

But hey, think again! Advertising is not that inconsiderate. Have you ever listened to radio broadcasts so excessively loaded with audio commercials its impossible to follow? And advertising might be excessive and disruptive, but I suppose only to a minority few. In fact, like I have said, informative ads are actually desirable. Dont you or your children feel excluded if you are not aware of the new iPod, or the latest music editor gadgets?

Trust the media. They are doing their work. Isnt Google putting into place keyword-related ads to better suit your preference? Trust the authority, too. They approve all circulating ads, or at least those we often see. And most of all, trust the advertisers. We are mutually dependent; we need them for our TV shows, and they need our money votes.

Finding Your Natural Weight - The Thin Side of the Story

Finding our natural weight isn't always easy. We know a fair amount about the effects of obesity but we don't have as much information about those who struggle to put on weight. Obesity increases our risk of some cancers, diabetes, depression and other health problems. The overweight generally live shorter lives. It does seem that constitutionally thin people are destined for better health and longer lives, as long as their thinness is not extreme.

Some people are thin due to non-genetic factors, such as, having eating disorders or being ill. However, it is estimated that about 70% of being thin is genetic. The search is on for the specific information related to the genetics involved. It may be that a constitutionally thin person has a metabolic system that turns food into energy very efficiently or it may be that they get full faster, eat less frequently, or don't crave fattening foods. Recent research showed the thin are often active, not just exercisers, but people who move a lot or 'can't sit still'.

A thin person is less likely to have eating disorders and thin women have a higher self-esteem than their overweight counterparts.

Thin and unhealthy

Unfortunately many who are thin consume a diet that is high in fat and sugar. While constitutionally thin people can eat a lot of junk food without adding weight, the long-term consequences can be serious. Foods that are high in fats and sugars bestow few health benefits and use the body's store of nutrients to metabolise them. This robs the body of nutrients that are needed for other metabolic processes. Added to this, a diet with too few fruits and vegetables, because the calories are coming from low nutrient dense foods, fails to supply the body with the required vitamins and minerals. With the malnourishment of a poor diet also comes a decreased immune system function and the associated problems of repeated infection, you can certainly be thin and unhealthy. As well as these factors a poor diet will also lead to an increase in the number of toxins that are accumulated in the body. These toxins are a great source of ill health and they need to be removed.

Are you too thin?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to indicate whether a person is overweight, underweight or a healthy weight. The score is valid for both men and women but it may overestimate body fat in people such as athletes who have a muscular build and underestimate body fat in older people and others who have lost muscle mass.

The Body Mass Index is divided into the following categories:

underweight - less than 18.5

normal weight -18.5 to 24.9

overweight - 25 to 29.9

obese - greater than 30

Someone with a BMI under 18.5 may be malnourished.

What is a healthy diet for the constitutionally thin?

Those who are thin are able to concentrate on the consumption of high quality nutrition rather than the consumption of calories. A healthy diet for everyone consists of the following:

  • A minimum or no sugar and refined carbohydrates. This includes sucrose, table sugar, white, brown or other sugars, glucose, honey, and sorbitol. Many foods, such as, sweets, cakes, chocolates, biscuits, pudding, jam, ice cream, soft drinks and other sweet tasting food contain large amounts of sucrose or other refined carbohydrates. White, refined flour has a lower content of vitamins and minerals than unrefined flour and should only be consumed in small quantities.
  • Animal and vegetable fats should be taken in moderation. On average most people in Western societies are advised to reduce their fat consumption to about 75% of their current levels. In particular, avoid poor quality foods that have a high fat content, such as fried foods, pies, sausages, preserved and tinned meats. Dairy foods are also high in fat content and low-fat forms should be preferred, or they should be taken sparingly (although this is not a concern for the constitutionally thin). There are serious questions about eating any dairy foods at all and people with lactose intolerance should avoid all dairy. This is probably true for everyone else too, notwithstanding its promotion by dieticians and the dairy industry.
  • Ensure a good daily intake of vegetables, especially the leafy green ones. Such foods are rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • Ensure a good intake of fiber. This may help with a number of minor conditions, such as, constipation, as well as having long term health benefits. High fiber foods include: beans, pulses, fruits and vegetables, as well as the cereals.
  • Eat a varied and interesting diet. Eating a limited range of foods may make it difficult to obtain adequate amounts of all the nutrients required. Eating should be a pleasure and a social event - so try to take pleasure and interest in the food you are eating. A good variety also helps reduce the development of food allergies and sensitivities.
  • Alcohol should be avoided. The evidence is rising that even in small amounts there are substantial adverse effects from drinking alcohol. Women who are pregnant or wanting to become pregnant should certainly not drink alcohol. Also men and women with liver disease should avoid alcohol.
  • Limit your intake of salt in cooking and in foods. Excessive salt intake can cause high blood pressure for some people.
  • Eat fresh food and avoid foods containing additives whenever possible. Additives, such as coloring agents, preservatives, emulsifiers, texturizers and flavorings may have short term and long term adverse effects. Fresh foods, free of these, are best consumed in their place.
  • Ensure a good, but not excessive intake of protein rich foods. Lean meat, fish, eggs, chicken (without the skin), nuts, seeds, peas, beans, lentils, sprouted beans and whole grains are rich in protein and vitamins and minerals.

If you haven't been eating the diet that is outlined above then your body will have built up a heavy toxic load. These toxins will be circulating, via the blood, to all areas of the body and in the process doing damage. They need to be remove (this is the case if you are thin, the ideal weight or overweight). Find out how to safely remove toxins from your body at safecoloncleansing.com and experience the benefits of lasting vitality and health.

If you are someone who has not been consuming a healthy diet or who finds it difficult, for whatever reason, to eat as suggested above you will benefit from the addition essential vitamin and mineral supplements. If you have the symptoms of specific vitamin and mineral deficiencies then the additional supplementation of these may be of significant assistance.

Fishing Vacation 101

Universally, the term gone fishing is associated with vacations. In that case planning a fishing vacation should be nothing more then a natural choice. Fishing combines sport, relaxation, communing with nature and free food and hence qualifies as the perfect vacation. From a weekend trip to the closest lake front camping ground to an adventurous and long packaged tour to the best fishing locales of the world, one has plenty of choices that could be made.

While planning a long fishing vacation, there are a couple of obvious choices to be made. First one being what type of fishing is most appealing. The most basic breakdown here is a choice between freshwater and saltwater fishing.

Fishing vacations come in various sizes and forms. They can be started with loading your car with fishing rods and sleeping bags or calling a travel agent or professional fishng guide.

These trips can be taken all the year round. Although the first thought is generally to catch the bass biting at the very onset of spring or the blues running in autumn. Trips can be made absolutely anytime of the year, even in the dead of the winter, just in case he angler has no aversions to cutting holes in the ice.

A properly planned vacation can be fun for all, irrespective of whether you are a novice or a very serious sportsman. The only essential purchase required is the fishing license, rest all can be rented. Rods and reels, boats and crews, which can even cater lunch, can be rented out.

It can be a way for families to spend time together while simultaneously enjoying the outdoors. Although the idea of skewering worms onto hooks may sound gross yet the vacation can be fun for the entire family. Fishing is a leisurely pastime and you dont have to excel at it to enjoy, and a total beginner might be just as good or even more than a seasoned pro.

Just because you are vegetarian, doesnt mean you cant have fun while fishing. One may use catch and release techniques for the fun of the sport.

While as said earlier, their can be several ways of going for fishing, however packaged tours certainly has some advantages. Best part here being that all the essentials are included right in the price. One need not carry all the equipment around, and thus the trip becomes more fun. Along with the trip, the vacationer also gets the expertise of the trip provider. Thus one need not hunt around for the best fishing hole and thus the chances of returning empty handed are considerably reduced. Also at fairly reasonable prices one may also get lunch included in the package deal.

Toughest decision to be made while planning a trip is, where to go. Think globally as ther are plenty of scenic fishing spots which are a real treat for anyone interested. British Columbia in Canada boasts of beautiful wilderness and streams filled with great number of fishes of an ample of species.

There are also the less exotic but easier on the pocket destination which can be good value for money. Prices for accommodations may range from 100$ to 300$.

One may also like to make it a learning experience, by opting for a Fishing School package. It generally includes hands-on and personal tutoring regarding the ins and outs of fishing. All the equipment is provided by the school. Prices may be around 300$ per session, travel expenses excluded.
